Inspired by the feminist art movement, Jan Aiello’s work explores themes of intimacy, vulnerability and care. Her experience as a mother and Breast Cancer survivor directs her attention to the more delicate forms we see in nature, and how like us, they gather, suffer, thrive, and regenerate.
“Repetition is usually the first word that comes to my mind when describing nature, and yet those little repeated forms can be quite different from one another. I love bringing those together to make icons that bring on lives of their own.”
Jan Aiello lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, with her husband and her 2 children. She recently relocated from the DC area where she lived and made art for 20 years. She has a degree in Art education and an M.A. in Painting. She spent 14 years teaching art in public and private schools while making art. She continued her education at the Corcoran School of Art in DC and Stanford University. She now works as a full-time artist in San Jose.
